Educating rural Indian children by leveraging tablet technology

About

40K PLUS runs an after-school education program in rural Indian villages for primary-aged children. We set up learning centres (pods) for up to 45 kids per village. We’re pioneering the use of 7 inch android platform tablet technology to deliver quality education. We provide the kids with tablets, fully loaded with our maths and English curriculum. The most innovative underlying philosophy is that we have unlocked a way for kids to teach each other through a tech-enabled learning path. PLUS addresses the teacher problem in rural villages in a creative and low-cost way. As highlighted by educational researcher and TED prize winner, Sugata Mitra, “good teachers are rare and expensive.” We train local women in how to facilitate rather than teach the curriculum effectively, thereby overcoming the traditional barriers of finding qualified teachers in rural villages.
